MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, not X-rays, to produce detailed images of the body’s soft tissues. In cardiovascular care, cardiac MRI can assess the heart’s structure, pumping function and muscle. MRI of other areas, such as the brain, abdomen or joints, may be recommended when your history or symptoms call for it.

A scan usually takes 30 to 60 minutes lying still inside the scanner, which is noisy; ear protection is provided. Some studies use a contrast agent given through a vein. Before any MRI you are screened for pacemakers, implants and other metal, and for kidney problems if contrast is planned. MRI can reveal incidental findings that are harmless but lead to further tests, so scans are recommended for a clear reason rather than as a routine search.

DEXA

A DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan uses a very low dose of X-rays to measure bone mineral density, usually at the hip and spine. It is the standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis and estimating fracture risk. The same technology can measure body composition: lean mass, fat mass and how fat is distributed, including an estimate of visceral fat around the organs.

You lie on an open table for roughly 10 to 20 minutes while the scanner arm passes over you. There is no injection and no enclosed tunnel. Results can be repeated over time to see how bone density or body composition is changing.

Who these may suit

MRI is chosen when a specific clinical question needs it. Bone density testing is recommended for many older adults and for younger people with risk factors such as certain medications or a previous fracture. A body composition scan can help people working on weight, strength or metabolic health who want a more precise measure than weight alone. Dr. Siddiqui will explain whether a scan is likely to help and how its results would be used.
